Hollis was already at the office and buried in his computer. He looked up as I sat at my desk across from his.

“I can’t believe we made it to the office before Sherry Linn,” I said.

“Most were stolen, and yes, I agree with you.”

“Back up a bit, dude. Most of what was stolen, and what do you agree with me about?”

He kept tapping away on his keyboard. “Most of Archer’s stash of weapons were stolen from people’s residences here in Oregon, and in Washington and Idaho. Maybe they all were, and some were just unreported. And that guy definitely looks like Archer, except maybe a little younger and with longer hair.”

“Ah, the joint bulletin. I guess I’m a little slow on the uptake this morning.”

“I don’t think so. You sent that email to the detective and me at six a.m. What made you remember it?”

“Something innocuous Harry said yesterday. Anyway, I want us to interview Jenna this morning, see if she knows anything about POSSE.”

“Good idea, Maggie.” Al had joined us.

“I didn’t find much online,” Hollis continued. “Except it seems like they operate primarily in what I’d call the US Pacific Northwest. And they’re on the run.”

“So not up and down the West Coast?” Bach asked. “How about Canadian influence?”

“No, just in our neck of the woods, and I can’t really tell if there’s any Canadian influence. But since the organization claims to be protecting state sovereignty, I’d bet Canada’s provinces and territories aren’t part of the deal.” He picked up the bulletin he’d apparently printed out. “Although Canada may be where some of them are hiding out and/or gathering up more weapons.”

“It’s my understanding gun laws are much stricter in Canada,” I said.

“They are, and that’s probably put a damper on collecting weaponry if that’s where any POSSE members took themselves.”

“You two have any insights about why Mr. Archer planted himself in Grant County?”

“No, Al. That’s something we should discuss with Jenna Rhinehart.”

“He’s from Portland originally, right?”

“And he served a couple of drunk and disorderly stays in the county jail there. Plus he took Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club novel a little too seriously,” Hollis said.

“Can you pull up the photograph you found last Thursday of Archer displaying his trove of guns?” I asked.

“Yeah, I downloaded it and put it in the online case file.”

“Let’s compare it to the list Harry brought by yesterday.”

“Good thought. And by the way, Harry Bratton sent the electronic version for our records right before you arrived.”

“This list,” Bach said. “Do you have a hard copy for me to peruse?”

I handed him mine. “Would you like to set up at Mark Taylor’s desk?” I’d noticed that someone—Sherry Linn, no doubt—had collected the family photographs from his desk.

“Sure.” He placed his laptop and thermos of tea on the now-spare desk.

“So, here’s the shot of Archer and those arms.” Al and I stood behind Hollis. “I already compared it to Harry’s list. Some appear to be on the list, and others not.”

“How about the ones you mentioned yesterday evening, Maggie? The two you had couriered to the Bend lab.
